Mohammad Rizwan: The new superstar of Pakistan cricket
Pakistan cricket looked to have found a new poster boy, as everything Rizwan touches turns to gold
PHOTO: Since it started playing T20 cricket in 2005, AFP Pakistan has been a dominant team. A team that has reached the knockout stages of the previous four World Cups, won the trophy once and is one of the favorites to win the ICC World T20 tournament that is currently being held in the United Arab Emirates.
This time around Pakistan, which is viewed as a side ward on its bowlers, will look towards their wicketkeeper-player Mohammad Rizwan to motivate the group to a second T20 World Cup triumph.
Rizwan's story fills in as motivation to other youthful Pakistani cricketers. The young wicketkeeper from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa made his T20 debut in 2015 against Bangladesh. In his first ten games, he scored 106 runs with a strike rate of around 100, which is clearly below par for any level.
Since captain Sarfaraz Ahmed was the team's preferred wicketkeeper at the time, Rizwan only played a few games in the first four years of his career. After the team suffered a devastating defeat at home against Sri Lanka in 2019, the PCB decided to fire Sarfaraz Ahmed. This was his last chance to shine. Rizwan, on the other hand, had to make a comeback in Australia, where the harsh conditions are a nightmare for any Pakistani batsman. As a result, Rizwan had an average run, scoring 45 runs in three matches with a strike rate below 100, and Pakistan lost the series to Australia.
Rizwan also had a disappointing Pakistan Super League (PSL) season during this time because he only got to play a few games for his team, Karachi Kings, and was not the first-choice wicketkeeper.
During one of the news conferences, Rizwan also expressed his dissatisfaction with the fact that he is not the preferred wicketkeeper and that he is referred to as someone unable to hit big shots.
Rizwan, the captain of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa team, was promoted to the top of the Natio order by head coach Abdul Razzaq after going through these trying times.
